As part of our education efforts, we will provide links beneath our core issues to useful content on these topics on other sites. Over time, we hope to provide students, parents and administrators valuable information on various student health topics, including "best practices." We plan to update this content on a regular basis, so please come back often. 1. Finances: We want to find ways to make student health centers more efficient and affordable. Here's a link to a recent article in US News and World Report on student fees related to funding college health centers, "Campus Health's Hidden Costs" (1/31/08): http://www.usnews.com/articles/education/2008/01/31/campus-healths-hidden-costs.html And here are some good ideas from an op-ed in the Baltimore Sun (9/1/08). 2. Mental health: We will be working to improve mental healthcare on campuses. 3. Eating disorders: We will raise awareness on the critical nature and prevalence of eating disorders on college campuses. 4. Quality of care: Finding ways to raise the quality of care for students is a priority for us. 5. Disorders related to behaviour: We will engage in educational efforts in the following areas: alcohol as a substance abuse; the value and cost/benefit of new, emerging vaccines such as the HPV vaccine; and, sexually transmitted diseases. CSHAL's President of our Board, Jim Boyle, is doing a radio tour this week on the dangers of drinking during spring break for teenagers in high school and college, and how parents can address safety concerns. We'll provide a link to some of the interviews here. There are some great tips and resources available through a coalition at their web site: HealthAllianceonAlcohol.com. A report on a disturbing study from the CDC on the high rate of STDs among teenage women can be found here. CSHAL supports greater education generally and also college health center vaccinations for HPV. 6. Wellness issues: We will conduct surveys, focus groups and make recommendations on how to ease student anxieties and increase exercise and fitness levels.-- Our survey of more than 500 college students which includes wellness issues, can be found here. -- Jim Grizzell, a friend of CSHAL's, has worked and taught on college campuses to improve the health and wellness of students, and has put together a valuable presentation on setting health and wellness goals for college students, with an emphasis on alleviating stress and anxiety. His PowerPoint presentation, which draws upon data and analysis from several surveys, can be found here. -- An excellent op-ed piece appeared recently in the Boston Globe which encapsulates why this priority is so important and how much can be done to set college students on the right path for their lives. The article can be found here. |
